The even-numbered parcels of land were given to the Agua Calientes, but federal law prohibited them from leasing or selling the land to derive income from it. In 1877, as an incentive to complete a railroad to the Pacific, the US government gave Southern Pacific Railroad title to the odd-numbered parcels of land for 10 miles on either side of the tracks running through the Southern California desert around Palm Springs. In 1853, a government survey party mapped Palm Springs and its natural hot springs mineral pool - now the site of the Spa Hotel and Casino - and established the first wagon route through the San Gorgonio Pass (now I-10). In 1863, a smallpox epidemic killed thousands of the Agua Caliente.
Much of tribal life centered around the lush vegetation and abundant water in the area known as Indian Canyons, site of North America's largest natural fan palm oases. One of many Cahuilla bands, the Agua Calientes existed as peaceful hunters and gatherers, adapting to the extremes of desert summers and mountain winters. More than 2,000 years ago, Palm Springs' first residents were the ancestors of today's Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. It was during the 1900s when the city became a popular tourist destination. It was in 1879 when the Agua Caliente Reservation was established over 31,000 acres, with the tribe living here being one of the wealthiest in the state. It was just a few short years later in 1848 when what is now Palm Springs was ceded to the U.S. In 1821, Mexican explorers recorded their expedition to the area. There were permanent settlements located throughout the region, with the early inhabitants taking advantage of the abundance of water as well as the hot springs that were used during the colder winter months. Palm Springs was first inhabited over 2,000 years ago by the Cahuilla Indians, and many prominent leaders lived in this area. Recent estimates show that the population has risen 7% since the last poll in 2010, indicating that this resort city has much growth left in its future. At the time of the 2000 census, growth had slowed considerably, but the city has continued only to gain more residents since the census of 1940. The city has shown significant growth in every census through the 1990s. Palm Springs has continued to grow in terms of population because of the celebrities that choose to live here and the people that want this city for their retirement. Over 7% of households are shared by same-sex couples, high above the national average of just 1%. What’s unique about the population in Palm Springs is that it has one of the largest concentrations of same-sex couples. It is most known for being a resort city, offering tourists and residents lots to do including outdoor activities like golf and hiking in the surrounding deserts and mountain areas.
